The Occult? Demonology?
Ξ June 11th, 2008 | → | ∇ Paranormal Worlds |

I was raised in a mixed religion household, although Christianity was the over-riding, accepted religion to practice. I do not attend church of any kind, but thoroughly support everyone’s right to do so, and worship as they please in their private lives among others who have also chosen to do so.
I do not subscribe, at this point, to the idea of demonology. Yet those Priests and ordained counselors of the church who do work with these cases, are necessary for followers of a particular religion. I would be inclined to trust a reputed psychic with lots of paranormal spirit experience, to do a spirit removal, versus a demonologist. But for those wanting their homes blessed, a demonologist is necessary. I think someone who can communicate (psychic) with spirits on some level, simply has a naturally better chance of removal or behavioral change.
Often you used to see groups like TAPS (Ghost Hunters on Sci-Fi) bringing along a “Demonologist” (something they’ve gotten away from altogether), in order to give them a different angle or perspective on a location’s reported activity. Demonology’s origins are purely religious in nature, and require one to have at least some belief in “creatures not created by God,” or like Satan, “have rejected and live to fight God by virtue of their very existence.” So to believe in Demonology, you would need to believe and follow the word of The Old And New Testament, or follow a religion that believes in the idea of hell.

I do not believe in the biblical idea or story of Hell. But even if I did, it has no place being used as part of a scientific (no matter how loosely and amateur the methods are) investigation(s). Demonology should be used to assist those who request religious aid only. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, it’s a practice Christians and others often need, and knowing someone willing to do this, preferably of the cloth, is almost a must for any team of people who do this formally. Capturing evidence of paranormal activity in a home, first, validates the need for a religious authority to help as a result. I don’t think the few priests or ministers who specialize in spirit removal, have time to bless everyone’s home just to be safe. So recording validating evidence backs up what are otherwise, stories, and helps to remove any “stigma” from the clients being thought of as crazy, evil, etc…, by people who haven’t experienced paranormal activity.
When it comes to the paranormal, and in particular this site, which deals with “spirit” phenomenon (for lack of a better, more popularized or accurate term), I do not consider or look for anything that isn’t capable of being recorded, or at least experienced by the 5 senses. I cannot let myself be influenced by our current lore, institutionalized spiritual definitions, or the popular definition of “ghosts,” among other things. This isn’t because I feel those things are wrong, or inaccurate, or untrue necessarily, it’s that I would be doing a disservice to myself and my purpose…which is to simply set aside all biases and make judgements on what I am able to record and verifiably experience (as a whole). I am all about recorded evidence, and finding better ways to do it.
Religion by it’s very nature requires and relies on the concept of faith. Of course when it comes to a scientific approach to paranormal spirit phenomenon, faith in spiritual or religious theology cannot be included as part of any conclusions made. It’s simply a separate issue.

Finally “The Occult” is often mentioned as something people look for evidence of, at active sites. That falls into religious/spiritual/demonology territory. There is zero proof out there that even Ouija Boards work, let alone attract negative, evil or demonic spirits of any kind etc…, In fact, I’ve used one more than once, and have never had an issue (although it did work per the instructions on the Parker Brothers box). I don’t think that just because “occult activity” took place at a location, that it has anything to do with paranormal activity.
It’s for these reasons that you won’t see me with a “scary” web (or Myspace) page with tomb stones and ghosts and goblins and bats, Rob Zombie music etc…, Nor will you see pictures of me here trying to look scary, other-wordly, fearless etc.., I don’t really care about all of that stuff. What people want is hard evidence, and I’m determined to find it (or not). That is what I want to do, and it’s all that interests me here, along with a better, scientific understanding of why paranormal activity exists, and what it is. We have to start somewhere.
