Investigation Summary:
- Research Page (focusing on Pearl Bryan Murder history for now)
Latin Quarter era (Mafia period – 1940’s-50’s) painting still hangs in the bar. Bathrooms signs also seem to be same period or earlier (obviously from the 20’s, 30’s or 40’s and don’t match the country theme).
This photo was taken early on in the night, I noticed the questionable orb in this picture after taking it, and put my video camera just to the left of where the orb in question appears. The camera sat up there by itself for about an hour. On the evidence page, you will hear some bangs next to the camera during this period that I couldn’t explain. It’s not “conclusive” evidence, but we couldn’t find any logical explanation for why something would make a clear “banging” noise, at varying distances from the camera (at one point apparently hitting it or coming close) with no one within 50 yards and separated by several walls/doors/rooms. Any attempt to get anywhere near that camera would’ve been picked up easily from the noise created just to get backstage, let alone through the loud creaking swing door and up that ladder. So I felt comfortable enough to post the videos of the bangings, as something to consider.
The basement area was relatively quiet with nothing other than a strange EVP It sounds like a deep voice saying “get out” in a very quick, almost violent manner – again this was recorded in the well area at the foot of the steps Mackey’s wife was reportedly pushed down back in the late 70’s. It honestly shook me up a bit, it was so quiet and dark down there, and then to just hear that in my ear phones, I knew something had j
Moon was 90% full (at least) – two days away from a full moon. Photo above is of the basement area standing near the entrance. You can only enter the basement now from the outside. The stairs leading to it from the old kitchen area is boarded up.
This is the stairwell they blocked off, looking up from the basement near the “well,” leading to the old kitchen area, which is now just a small riser area with tables and chairs in the main bar/stage area of the club on the ground floor, and is no longer walled-off. (big, open area)
This is the infamous “well” or “Hell’s Gate.” I didn’t really feel or notice anything particuarly hellish about it, and the tour guide claimed it couldn’t be kept covered up, but that could be due to erosion and lack of maintenance, no way of really knowing. The area was damaged and uncovered, but the well was filled-in with cement and dirt safely. The basement did have some interesting bottles and candle holders from the early 19th century, and a very old felt covered card table. It looked as though people did some partying down there at one time or another, as there were cigarette butts and beer cans lying around also.
Picture of the love poem on the very small, cubicle-sized room above the stage, reached only from the attic. The tour guide said Johanna was kept in this room for some reason, for periods of time. Not sure if the poem is a gimmick, but it’s written in some sort of pencil, is very well thought out (relatively speaking), and is from someone who clearly is in some sort of desperate love-lost situation. We got a lot of video orb activity here at the end of the night.

Orb activity seemed to follow us downstairs, from the small room with the poem, down the ladder and behind the stage. Strange female voice loudly recorded on video camera coinciding with orb/rod-like appearance (“I know” it sounds like – see evidence file below).
I think it’s safe to say Bobby Mackey’s is active, and deserves another investigation, during the right time of year and with more coverage and environmental control, it could yield more results. I am skeptical of many of the stories that are out there about the place, but caught enough bits of evidence to make me think the place is probably active with some amount of activity, with potential for some pretty unusual activity that’s capable of physical manipulation.

Debbie – Yes you probably won’t experience anything there on regular bar nights. Most of what we captured was in the backstage area and in the basement, while the building was empty.

Im a local of the area and to convey my best wishes to Mr. Mackey and to say that i believe whole-heartedly that their are spirits (demonic) there at the site and that you’d be fool if you didnt believe in the stories; for iv’e experienced them myself!!!!

Thanks for stopping by Ken. I’m a natural skeptic and tend to believe there’s something “negative” or “possessive” there (of the building). Would love to see or record some evidence that justifies some of the stories, and hope to go back some day.

I used to live near Wilder some years ago. I saw a spot on “America’s Most Haunted Places” about Bobby Mackey’s place. My sister in law and I decided to go check it out. This was mid winter and if you stood under a heat duct you could feel heat coming out but it would not warm the place at all. In some spots near the stage you could actually see your breath it was so cold. There was also a blast of frigid air in front of the men’s room door but not in front of the women’s room door (the two doors were side by side). I also felt very “heavy” in some areas (near the entrance and near the sound booth. Almost like my feet were magnatized and stuck to the floor. It was strange for sure. The worst was the cold though. It was practically arctic near the stage and yet there were lights over the dance floor that should have produced plenty of heat. The back of that building gave me the absolute willies though. We drove around back before we left and just sat there in the car for a few minutes. It was just flat out creepy. It was very dark but we both swore we could make out a shadow of a person on the stairs and yet the upstairs apartment is supposed to be sealed off. Who knows! It was fun though. I’d like to go there and poke around without a bunch of people around sometime.

Jill – Thanks for sharing your thoughts about BM’s. I do agree there’s some noticeable heaviness to certain rooms/areas at times. We experienced this in the larger concrete room in the basement, in the front of the building, under the entrance. I can also say it’s pretty tough for me to go backstage, there’s a definite possessive feel to that whole backstage and area above the stage. I don’t usually like to give-in to those sorts of things, there’s a chance it’s just someone psyching themselves out, but there’s some weird stuff going on in there.

It’s not that I don’t believe Bobby Mackey’s is active, but I would prefer to separate the sensational lore and passed-down exaggerations, from what’s actually going on there. And yes, some of the stories the workers there tell me are pretty bizarre (just not as popular, but more believeable).
Can’t really debunk chairs en masse flipping upside down, strange phone calls from the bar to a guy’s cell phone, people being pushed or tapped on the shoulder etc..,

I have been there Twice and Im Really suprised you guys Did Not pick up anything , That basement is creepy .In 4 to 6 weeks I will post some more info up , but it can be Viewed on TV the Last night that we did there .

I did pick up a few minor things (see link at top of the page). We didn’t stay late enough and got a late start on top of that, too many people were there, very noise and interrupted too often – hope to go back soon.

I went down in the basement twice over a two year period. The first time, along with someone who had a family connection to the place, we tried to shoot video of the well with two Sony Handy-Cams. Both cameras had full battery drains, but when we would step outside the batteries showed fully charged again? The second time we took a tech engineer with us and absolutely nothing happend.

Thanks Bill. A producer from “The Starz Channel” and I visited BM’s, she had her video camera malfunction there as well (for the first time), and also a girl who investigated there with me, from MARS Productions (friends of Grant in TAPS/Ghost Hunters). I never had a problem, but camera/battery drains/malfunctions seem to be common. Not sure what to make of that.

our paranormal team, the cincinnati ohio paranormal investigators (COPI) visited bobby mackeys just last sunday night, june 8/08. once our evidence is completed, we will let you know. i can tell you this, one of our investigators was tapped on her shoulder, and another one ended up with scrathes on her back. we had every inch of the place covered with our cameras, if there was any paranormal activity that night, than we have cought it.

I really want to visit sometime, but I get scared way too easily. I believe there are some ghosts there because I’ve been doing research..etc.., but are they really demonic? Did someone really get posessed? How can you tell when there is a ghost around? Please help me out. Oh, and one of my neighbors has been to Bobby Mackey’s and really enjoyed it! i watched the episode of a haunting on this place… and it might be nice and everything but what i seen and heard about that place i would never even think about going in there and i live only about an hour away from it.

I am th author of Hell’s Gate. I never believed in ghosts or poltergeists until I stumbled across the story surrounding Bobby Mackey’s nightclub. Bobby MAckey had kept the story completely hush hush until I found out about it. Once I did I began a two year investigation and while doing so I spent several nights inside the nightclub when it was closed for business. I was told by a medium to taunt the spirits. Well, I did so and saw a lot of various things happen such as a garbage can go flying from behind the bar and smash itself to a crumpled mess. I witnessed the juke box(UNPLUGGED) come on and play the Anniversary Waltz. I watched doors open and close by themselves and heard a loud sighing voice coming from the walls themselves. It sounded like someone with Asthma trying to breathe. This place is haunted and that you can believe.

Saw this on episode of “Ghost Adventures” on Friday night, Oct 24, 2008
It also talked about the gruesome murder of Pearl Bryan. Her head was cut off by some demonic cult ritual and never has been found after being disposed of in the well enroute to the river.

Greg – I don’t think I removed anything you said to Doug? I’m not sure what you’re referring to honestly.
I also admit, openly, that BM’s is haunted. I just think quite a bit of the lore (Pearl Bryan, Demonic presence) is speculation at best and can’t be backed up with any solid sources. I’d love to believe everything everyone told me, but I can’t operate that way here.
That said, I welcome people’s stories and comments – and won’t delete them unless it’s inflammatory or includes personal attacks etc..,

I lived in a haunted house like this between 1984 to 88. And I also am a country music musician. I was able to rid the house by singing gospel music and it drove the unclean spirits away. Some of the most scariest things happend there. My advice is not to dwell on these matters.

I have been going to Bobby Mackeys for 15 years. I believe that some of the stories i have heard are true. I have been in BMs with the crowds and without the crowds and haven’t experienced anything other than a pool ball moving as i was getting ready to shoot. I cant explain that at all. Not another ball moved just the ball i was aiming to shoot at!! I have family and friends who work at BMs and most have said they have expeienced something there. I believe their stories just wish i could experience something more than a pool ball moving.

Hi, I was there 11/1/08, it was creepy, I definitly felt the spirts there but it was all very evil. I got very cold chills. I don’t think I want to return but thanks for the tour! I hope the good souls Johanna and Pearl get to rest someday.

Hello, Myself and my girlfriend were there Saturday November 8th. We were taken on a tour by Carl Lawson. There were three other people in the basement on a tour with another guide. Carl asked us all if we would like to turn out all the lights and try to make contact with the “spirits”. We all agreed. We saw two eyes, reddish in color. No doubt about it. I have always been skeptical about ghosts but not anymore.

Debbie I would have to say all around the basement, behind the stage and definitely near the so called “Hell’s Gate.” If you go on the tour make sure you ask for the tour guide to turn off the lights and try to connect with the spirits!

I agree with Jonny Debbie – the back stage area and above the stage (cat walk) seems to be the most active with a female spirit, and the entire basement. That said, people also get EVP’s right in front of and around the stage as well. The men’s bathroom has also had plenty of stories/activity.

I am not sure if TAPS is going to Bobby Mackey’s or not – my guess is they might be “too cool” (i.e. too Hollwyood) for it.
Bianca – I don’t believe the Pearl Bryan Murder has a thing to do with Bobby Mackey’s and I have yet to see a shred of evidence that suggests there’s a connection. It’s nothing more than a story Doug Hensley conjured up for his book at this point.

I went there Valentine’s night 2009. I’ve never been there and really knew nothing about the place. When i walked in the door i smelled a very strong freshly cut roses smell(like after the rain with a powdery hint). I got very dizzy and started to get chills. We sat at the bar and got a drink. We then went over to the bull ride area sat down and i began to freeze. I was shaking so bad my jaw was shivering non stop. We then went to the dance floor. I smelled the same flowery scent and brisk winds. My head began to ich like crazy as well as my eye brows. I felt sick almost. My jaw started to lock up. I wanted to bite down so hard. You know when its so cold you just bite hard on your teeth and tense up?…It was like that but non stop. We decided to go downstairs. It was freezing as well in there. In one room it had a strong urine smell like very fresh. This wall the tour guide took us to was just a cement wall to me I took a picture of it then I took another picture in another room. I came home that night went to bed then woke up to look at my pictures. The picture of the wall has 3 very distinct people in it. The picture of the room has a face of a dark caped evil lookin thing. What all this is and what I felt??? Who knows, What I can say is this……something is there….What?…….not sure. But, I feel fine today and have never felt anything like that in my life.

for people who dont believe there is stuff there,they should check it out for themself.ive been down there every weekend for a few months now during the day.i didnt think much of it but my second time there i heard a laughter,an evil chuckle, like someone saying ‘i got something for you’right befor they beat u up.then last week i had to climb into the well to get my pic axe head(it broke)and something said my name.i didnt hear it at first but it was caught on dvr.didnt believe at first till i listened to it. there is something there.ive heard all kinds of stuff but those are the 2 most distinct.and behind stage has been the most active that ive noticed compared to other places in the building.i have not seen anything. just heard them

i was hesitant at first that BM’s was hanted but when when i finally got to go there, i captured a face on my camera, down in the basement, on the back wall that apparently used to be covered in blood… it is really freaky!!! now i beleive through and through that that place is haunted… the picture is a very clear face, i think i looks like a women but it is really hard to tell… but it is a very clear face, and it looks very sad…

BM’s seems like more hype and sensationalism than anything else, given the claims of satanic rituals and whatnot. People love that crap like they love a good trainwreck. That said, I’d like to get there someday and investigate without tour-guides and embellished tales. It’s good to hear from an investigator who can be curious and remain rational at the same time!

Having grown up in a small town with strong “traditional” religious ties, I know the attraction and staying power a good ghost story can carry. Especially one that has some devil worshippers tied into it. I can’t help but also be skeptical regarding the ties to the beheading murder and BM’s because, like it has been pointed out, there has been no real evidence to support the story. I have been interested in the BM story for a long time and frequently search out new stories and investigations and I have to say that NOTHING was as convincing as the “Ghost Adventures” episode. I am not easily spooked but that had me sitting up late at night hearing sounds in my house 2 days later. Truly spooky. Being a professional sound engineer with video production experience I understand the possibility of “post production magic” when it comes to these types of shows. But that episode just reeked of authenticity, and it provided some very strong evidence to not only the existence of paranormal entities, but also the existence of true and malicious evil. I may want to stop into BM’s some day and have a beer or two, but I would think twice about being there alone, much less being bold enough to call out some taunts for the sake of my own vain knowledge.

I never have been there before but iv seen a show on BM. while they were down in the basement this guys back felt very warm so he pulled up his shirt so the other people could see if there was anything wrong with it and there was at least 12 huge scratches on his back.(the show was called ghost adventures!!!!

My twin sister and I just visited the bar last weekend, and we took the tour of the basement. Upstairs in the bar, we felt quite comfortable, but the basement was creepy. My digital camera, which had new batteries, shut off six times. But each time it would turn back on and allow me to take more pictures. At one time, I asked my sis why she took a pic of the floor, and she said she didnt even touch the button. The gentlemen touring with us also had his camera take a picture without him physically doing it. At the bottom of the stairs, my twin and I heard steps that were coming in our direction. I snapped a pic and caught an orb. Then we both felt very hot and very dizzy. We left then holding hands to go get a well needed cold beer! I have never felt a basement soo hot!

Some serious hauntings going on in this club. I have investigated it several times, most recently with the Travel Channel for the show “Extreme” which will air in October.
I also wanted to get to the bottom of what’s happening here, and filter out fact from fiction. My findings are being published in a new book called “Haunted Cincinnati: Ghosts of the Queen City”. It will also be available in October. I can tell you this….Pearl Bryan does NOT have any relevant link to this site, as mentioned by others above. There’s really no reason for her to haunt the place, unless she liked messy, run-down buildings where drunks hang out.

I went to Bobby Mackey’s Music World in 2003. My boyfriend thought it would be a fun way to find out if I was pregnant. He said pregnant women only smell roses and that Janet Mackey was pregnant when she was thrown down the stairs. He didn’t tell me there was a connection to her even being pregnant. I read up on the stories of other pregnant women who went there. Needless to say I was scared, especially after finding out he knew about that part of the story.
When we went there he went to the bathroom and left me alone in the loneliest corner of the bar. Nothing happened. I just felt lonely accept for the staff coming over to see if I needed anything. The loneliness could’ve been from the location he left me in. BTW we found out later I wasn’t pregnant. Maybe that’s why nothing major happened.
They did say that since I’m in a wheelchair I would have to go in the mens room. After hearing what had happened in there I just decided not to drink anything. I’m planning to go back with some friends who are into this stuff. I’ll post any stories if I have any.

Here is my little experience at BM.
Just a couple of nights ago,I was replying to a blog on my multiply site.
It was one of those have you ever had a scary experience. So I thought I would post mine. This is what I wrote.
There is a bar Named Bobby Mackey’s Well it is well know there are ghost there. But at the time of my experience I didn’t know anything about it.
My gf and I decided to stop in for a drink. It was a cold winter night. snow was falling. I had my rabbit fur coat on ,we were all hussied up !
It’s an old building ,wood floors kind of like the old western saloons.
As we walked in the front door,there is a long bar and 2 men,dressed in western style clothing were behind the bar.
We sat on the stools. This is when it got creepy !
The bartender kept walking back and forth behind the bar as if he couldn’t see us.
There was a large back room visible from where I sat. There was no one to be seen. It’s about 1:00 am.
Having had a few already, I told my gf I was going to the restroom.
I got off the stool, walked towards the restroom,which was directly to my left.
As I got closer, I felt a draft hit me and saw a mist like come from the room.
I slowly walked closer into the room, and as I did, the cold draft got stronger.Now I enter and there is no one there,I heard voices was like a hum, chant. I was again blasted with a cold wind, and I was so freaked,I ran screaming to my friend,lets get out of here!
We ran to our car and swore never to go back.
I believe I was in the presence of Evil Spirits! I felt it as soon as we walked in. My friend did not.
But was freaked that they acted as if we weren’t there.
Was not long ago a book has been written about the place. And many ghost strories are in it.
It’s Cincinnati Ghost.
And just 2 yrs ago I met the author of the book. Told her my story.
To bad I didn’t meet her before.
Now that being said I have been on the paranormal site checking on BM
It was back in 1979 when I was there. And I have never been even close to the place since.
My question is, the building is not the way I remember it.
I remember a concrete platform that you step on to get to the front door.
And I don’t remember it being as long of a building.
Not being so close to the road. Wonder if there are any pic’s of the building
from that year.
It’s hard to explain the feeling, but it was real !
All of a sudden, this subject has come up Thinking about getting some family members to go with me and check it out . Oh, I do not want to tour the basement !
I had a hard time getting past the bar !

here we go ppl i got a story coming out..about my part of bobby mackeys ..what happened after being there..but its the trueth lol..the book will be out september 30th..look 4 it its good..

Just had to stop back here to see whats going on..Its about that time of year ”halloween’’so we think about bobby mackeys ”GHOST’’storys..I been doing alot of researce on this story again..The funny thing about bobbys mackeys one of the biggest parts to this story ”THE WELL”?..I opened it 15years ago but the story ‘’show”on T.V. said defferent?????? Why would that be maybe theres more to this story you think..I NO..there is..Theres things ya’ll have no idea thats going on there..To this day what i saw when i was opening the well no one knows but my wife..I tryed not to keep reading up on this story but i keep thinking about 2 of the ladys in this story you no who they are if you no anything about bobby mackeys..Owell have a great ”HALLOWEEN”

Your orb at the top of the ladder? That’s normal. Nothing spiritual. I’m a photographer and have trouble with these when I use cheaper lenses.

“Roy” – That’s why I said it was a “questionable” orb. I do not believe most of the similar anamolies like that are paranormal either.
