Why not just call everyone “EVP Hunters?”

Because in fact, that is what “most” groups out there are doing, including shows like GHI, where video and/or visual evidence is extremely rare – and it is. It’s much easier to catch EVP’s, no matter how questionable, because anyone with an easy-to-use digital audio recorder can do it – ANYONE.
The difference I try to make with EVP’s in particular, is to clean them up and/or present them properly, which is something that’s severly lacking out there in my opinion. At this point my Dolby surround digital video cameras do a better job of picking up EVP’s than a Radio Shack digital audio recorder, no matter how expensive. Plus the video compliment lets people see who is in the room, if anyone, and often is more convincing than audio alone, in addition to the audio quality simply being better.
White Noise?
White Noise is a MYTH!! I some times feel like I’m talking to “Creationists” who refuse to believe the earth is older than 6,000 years despite glaring facts stating otherwise, their reasons for debunking as well as explaining why “white noise” helps catch EVP’s is vague and usually not based on anything remotely scientific. What “white noise” is, is static!! It’s background noise that gets garbled and our ears/minds warp the sounds into something familiar most often – much like our brains matrix cloud shapes and odd anamolies in pictures, into something familiar.
When you can’t come to a basic consensus on what is being heard, it’s not a good EVP, if one at all.
The best way to record an EVP is with high quality audio recording equipment – I use a Zoom Handy Studio Recorder whenever I can – the high bit rates, windscreen and mic quality only capture what is “real” and not ambient noise, it picks up what’s closest to the microphone and you can clearly pick up voices this way – versus garbled sounds and background noise. I can’t stress this enough. I’ve done enough of this to know that EVP’s are either going to be heard or they are not – no amount of radio interference or static background noise is going to “help” voices come through – that is complete nonsense! If it’s not, then I’d like to see ONE concrete, scientific study as to why this would occur. It’s purely a theory with no quantifiable way to test it (much like most of what we do).
High Quality vs Low Quality recording modes
Again this relates to the folks who think background noise or static “help” voices come through, which is false and follows no basic principles of sound physics or understanding of science. Generating static or background noise does not mean you are generating some sort of mystical energy – it’s just unnecessary noise that gets in the way of clear EVP recordings.
Look through my site at all the EVP’s here, not a single one of them were caught using white noise or low recording modes – it doesn’t make a difference.
Now, why digital and magnetic tape recorders can pick up EVP’s in the first place, is a whole nother story we still don’t understand. So why do people still pretend to “understand” why this happens, by preposing white or background noise help attract EVP’s? It makes no sense, you nor I nor anyone understands “why” EVP’s are being recorded, or why they occur – it’s just not something we know enough about yet, period.
Just another frustrating pseudo-scientific bit of nonsense that has to be deatl with amongst the hordes of know-it-alls (I am NOT one despite the way I sound here!) and people posing as experts on something they do not understand a thing about.
Because of my frustration level and the ignorance going on out there ever since the “Ghost Busters” phenomenon took over, I will continue to post things that attempt to separate fact from fiction, or the unknown from preposed theories by your average “ghost hunter.”
Next up: Demonology!
